Beginning Tuesday, August 10, disability professionals from around the nation will gather for a vast array of educational programming.  The annual week begins with two all day preconference sessions to choose from.

 Preconference Sessions

 George Suess – “Using Transparency to Attract the Best of the Best”

Want to dramatically increase consumer growth and satisfaction? How about boosting staff morale and retention? Or would you prefer to reduce the injuries and headaches caused by untoward incidents, assaults, allegations of abuse, and poor survey results? This preconference is loaded with sound theory and practical tips to do just that.

It starts by attracting and empowering the best of the best. These shining stars don’t want a job; they want to make a difference. They won’t stick around if constrained by indifferent management of underperforming co-workers. They bristle at double standards and bolt at hypocrisy. 

In this preconference George Suess, CEO of The Arc of Delaware County (Delarc) will share a proven model which has captivated and inspired audiences from coast to coast. Attendees will learn:

-          How transparency begins with clarity of values.

-          How to create accurate job profiles which reflect the values and assure integrity.

-          How to develop outcome based job descriptions to eliminate ambiguity and increase performance.

-          How to make your recruitment and selection process stand out to attract the best.

-          How to improve efficiency and effectiveness by converting from in-service training to what Delarc calls, in the course of service training.

-          And how to use these same devices to address existing staff performance issues.

Dr. Carl Tyler and Steve Baker – “Advocating for Good Healthcare:  The Right Time, Right Place, Right Person, Right Way”

QDDPs have an enormous influence on the organization and quality of health care services provided their clients with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.  This presentation will help you examine, evaluate, and improve the health care services provided your clients through this 4-domain template:

Right Time refers to health care that anticipates and plans for potential emergencies, based on the client’s past medical history and present on-going health problems.

Right Place refers to health care that occurs in the environment with sufficient resources to evaluate and treat the health condition in the most expeditious and cost-effective manner.

Right Person refers to health care by the individual(s) with the necessary training and resources to provide the best outcome.

Right Way refers to health care that exemplifies the core values of a patient centered medical home: comprehensive care through continuous healing relationships, with a whole person orientation in a family and community context.

Dr. Tyler will illustrate these concepts utilizing specific case examples from his 20 years of experience in developmental disabilities medicine. In advance of the conference, he invites attendees to email him specific questions and topic areas of interest involving health care advocacy.
