We have developed a great tool at our agency called an Employee Support Plan. It is designed to be an opportunity for the staff to dialog with their supervisor and then set goals for themselves in the areas of education and training, consumer centered, as well as personal goals. We meet on a quarterly basis to review and update our plans. If there is a performance issue that needs to be addressed, this is done at a different meeting so that this quarterly meeting does not turn into a negative or anxiety producing experience. There is also opportunity to include input from consumers and guardians as well as feedback from the supervisor about dependability, reliability, teamwork, quality of work and relationships with people supported. There are some general discussion questions to get discussion started, but the important thing is to take time to dialog, review progress on goals and problem solve as needed.
